Overview

This project has been biggest UX-project in my life so far and our group of sex was to design an app for new employees at the Swedish Education System. From the start there were six of us, but the two last months we were two members. Our project was running over all courses such us: user research, experience design, rapid prototyping.
In this project we had to deal with a lot of (for us) unknown and not once did we even blink when throwing ourselves into the project. We did a free falling down into research and prototyping, but we had our parachutes with us and we knew where we wanted to land.
Hope you can see how much we enjoyed this project after reading through this case study.

The Challange

Understanding users needs and Pain points & Design an onboarding app for new employee teachers, responsive UI through the research and design process.

Design Process

  1. Empathize – Secondary Research, Competitive Analysis, Survey, User Interview
  2. Define – User Persona, User Journey Mapping, POV (Point Of View)
  3. Ideate – HMW (How Might We), Brain Storming Ideas, Product road map, User flow, Sketches.
  4. Build – Wireframes, Logo Design, Style tile, UI Kit, Prototype, Final UI screens
  5. Test – User Testing, Affinity Mapping

1. Research

Qualitative and quantitative

Onboarding process for new teacher’s can determine their longevity within the field of education. The issues of teachers onboarding process were analyzed through by our qualitative and quantitative research analysis. The results of our study indicate that teacher’s may feel stress, lack appropriate support, and may feel lack of practice information at a first work month. Based on our interview, mentoring support between new and experienced teachers not only benefited novice teachers but guided them to cope and face the anxieties during the first year in the classroom. According to this we would like to introduce our supporting application with usefully functions for teacher during their onboarding process.

2. Define

Define

People are always excited when they start a new job. Take advantage of that positive energy by giving them an awesome employee onboarding experience that makes a real impact. Our onboarding platform will help bring new teachers on board quicker, integrate them better, and make everyone’s job easier!

“...how might we help new teachers employee and make an onboarding process less painful and smoother?”

Persona

We created our personas based on our research in order to represent the different user types that might use our service and productin a similar way. Creating personas help us to understand our users’ needs, experiences, behaviors and goals. Creating personas help us to step out of ourself. It help us recognize that different people have different needs and expectations, and it also help us identify with the user’s designing for.

Empathy Map

Empathy maps are a great tool for understanding your users, organizing our research, and driving a human rather than a technical view of a product or project. We create them to provide a proxy for the user during design and to ensure that the project team is in a human-centered mindset. It allows us to understand the broader influencers in user’s lives. And by organizing our research into a coherent vision, this tool allows us to gain empathy with our users and to create a cohesive, empathetic view of them. Knowing how the user feels, how would they feel about this design decision?

Storyboard

To get a general understanding of how users will be interacting with the product on a daily basis, I created a storyboard. Storyboarding helps us visualize the interaction between the user and the product in real life.

3. Ideate

Card Sorting

Once I capture a clear understanding of user needs and pain points, it was now time to generating the different possible solutions. Before diving deep into designing it was necessary to create a meaningful structure of the website in terms of information architecture. And to achieve that I started with the Card sorting method to categorizing the content of the website in an understandable way.

Initial Sketches

Based on user research findings and key task user flows, we first sketched out my wireframes on paper before creating digital versions of them. My paper sketches included three separate versions of the homepage.

Customer Journey

3. Build

Wireframes

When working on the wireframes we took in to account that there is a variety of different kinds of users at a workplace. Most working people these days probably has a smartphone, but not everyone uses them the same way, or rather, the same amount of time each day.
That is why we focused on gratification for motivation, gamification to make the learning fun and streamlining as much as possible into the app to release frustrations that the users already have about information being scattered over different platforms.

Prototype

The final prototype is designed to make life easier for the new employees. A decision was made to implement the latest UI design trend “neumorphism”. This was a decision that we know comes with risks and also a design that does not give much thought to accessibility. The reason why we still decided to go through with this design is because we wanted to test it on the average users to see how they would react to it,
does it only look nice or does it also feel nice to use?

Usability Testing

Reflektion

Since this is our first case we can ascertain that we have learned a lot of new things inside the UX Design world. After all our reseach and data that we have collected we started to work with the protopyte and bring it to life. Even if we do not really believe that our application will take its first breath in the school we still state that it was a rich process and we got a lot of experience from it.
